MIAMI — The Women’s World Cup kicks off Thursday in Australia and New Zealand, which means soccer fans in the United States will be setting early morning alarms, as they did for the 2022 men’s World Cup in Qatar and as diehard tennis fans do for the Australian Open.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup starts today, and more teams are taking part than ever before. The number of women and girls playing soccer around the world has also increased from about five million in 2014 to more than 13 million in 2019.

At least five others were injured after a gunman opened fire in Auckland’s Central Business District

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — A gunman using a pump-action shotgun opened fire along Auckland’s scenic harbor Thursday morning, killing two and wounding half a dozen others less than 12 hours before the women’s World Cup was scheduled to kickoff at less than three miles away at Eden Park Stadium, authorities…

The incident came just hours before co-hosts New Zealand were due to kick off the tournament against Norway at Eden Park.

Police said there were also multiple injuries during the incident, which took place near the hotel where Team Norway has been staying.
