World Meteorological Organization warns of record temperatures and extreme heat in environmental ‘double whammy’

Extreme weather events frequently hit the headlines for the severe damage they cause, but the death tolls that result from them have plummeted in recent years.

NEW YORK — Extreme weather has caused 2 million deaths and more than $4 trillion in damages over the last 50 years, according to a United Nations report.

Research by the World Meteorological Organisation found economic damages from events like floods, storms and wildfires totalled £3.5trillion since 1970.

The probability of the world exceeding the 1.5C climate change target within the next five years has risen to 66%, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
