The contest to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has begun after he announced he is resigning as Conservative Party leader

Ministers have been urging Boris Johnson to resign for a number of days

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, expected to resign in just over an hour, started appointing new ministers to his cabinet on Thursday, including a third education secretary in three days.

His resignation will trigger an internal election to pick a new leader of the Conservative Party, who will also be the next prime minister. He steps down after defections left him unable to govern.

The outgoing Prime Minister has vowed to not make major policy decisions before his successor is chosen. Sir John Major has warned it is 'unwise and unsustainable' for Mr Johnson to stay on during the leadership contest.
