WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court’s two Black justices sparred over the meaning and impact of race in dueling opinions on the majority’s decision to curtail affirmative action programs at universities.

BOSTON — The phrase “affirmative action” rippled around conversations at the Harvard campus Thursday afternoon, as students took in the significant implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling against their school.

Simply declaring that schools should now be color-blind won’t make it real — or fair. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote as much in a separate dissent, “[D]eeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life.”
