Chicago’s minimum wage will increase July 1, hitting $15.80 per hour for many workers across the city.

The “One Fair Wage” campaign wants tipped workers to make the same minimum wage as anyone else in Chicago. Tipped workers instead are paid $9. On July 1, that rises to $9.48 and the $15-an-hour minimum wage goes to $15.80.

Earlier versions stood for decades in the park at Diversey, Kimball and Milwaukee avenues. South Shore artist Damon Lamar Reed created the new one.

Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa wouldn’t say where the new centers could be, only that the administration was “very close to moving on a number of locations, some big and some small, primarily in Spanish-speaking communities.”

“Mayor Lightfoot, in her final days, really worked to harm this incoming administration. It’s sad. It’s unfortunate. But we now have to come together as a city and clean up the mess that she left us,” Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, the mayor’s City Council floor leader, told the Sun-Times.

Rich Guidice, who for 20 years ran the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, said “Chicago Police did the best they could to get to the scene of the incident as quickly as they did.”

If the new zoning chair and Council floor leader is more pragmatic than some of his critics expect, it could be a positive step for progressive politics in Chicago and developers.
