Queensland's flood death toll has risen to eight after a man was found dead in a submerged car on the Gold Coast, while thousands of properties are under water.

A severe storm system pummelled Australia's northeastern city of Brisbane on Sunday, causing evacuations, power outages and school closures as the death toll climbed to seven from accompanying flash floods.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has compared the current floodwater effects to those of a cyclone. “At the moment, what we have is similar to like Cyclone Debbie or Cyclone Oswald or a monsoonal trough that we saw in Townsville, where it’s just sitting over the entire south-east of our state.”
