Police have charged a 20-year-old man with murder over the death of a 24-year-old man near the Fortitude Valley train station, following a "confrontation" between two large groups of people this morning.

The man was arrested along with two others near a train platform this morning.

The two other men, aged 21 and 20, were released without charge after assisting police.

Police will allege that an "altercation" between two groups of men broke out in Brunswick Street mall around 4am and continued inside a shopping complex nearby where the victim was allegedly stabbed.

The victim was given preliminary first aid and treatment but died at the scene.

Regional Duty Officer Inspector Sean Cryer said police saw the incident take place on CCTV footage around 4am.

"On closer examination, they saw a male person lying on the ground and persons nearby had blood on them," he said.

Inspector Cryer said police and emergency services were dispatched, administering first aid and CPR to the man, who suffered injuries, but he was later declared dead at the scene.

"It was determined three persons had decamped into the rear of the railway station," Mr Cryer said.

"The search was conducted for those persons, they were located on platform four."

A crime scene was declared at the Metro Valley complex along Brunswick Street.

Queensland Rail said train services would not be affected.

A Translink spokesperson said services at bus stop 211 on Brunswick Street, outside the station, have resumed after being temporarily affected.
