It's a time of transition on the Las Vegas Strip, and one famous name looks set to return in a big way.

The state gaming board will be looking at logistics and security plans, but they should also look at how Bally’s will ensure that more people, especially poor people, do not become addicted to gambling.

The casino operator does not own the casino that carries its name, but changes are in the works.

Bally’s filed its application with the Illinois Gaming Board on Wednesday, taking a major step in the process to build Chicago’s first casino and the flagship property for its fast-growing company.

Bally’s has filed its application with the Illinois Gaming Board seeking approval for a $1.7 billion riverfront casino-resort. The city is hoping a temporary casino can open by next summer. But the board has up to a year to review the application, with the possibility of an extension beyond that.

The proposed increase would cost the owner of a home valued at $250,000 just $34 more a year, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said, “about the price of an Al’s Italian beef — hot, dipped, with extra cheese — for a family of four.”

The casino operator has been working to reshape its portfolio and that includes selling one of its Las Vegas Strip casinos.
