Washington (AFP) - American employers slowed the pace of hiring in August after the surprising surge in the prior month and the jobless rate edged up, according to government data released Friday, which could offer the central bank some relief that its inflation-fighting efforts are working.

"We could be at an inflection point, from super-charged job gains to something more normal," said ADP's chief economist Nela Richardson.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell Wednesday on weak jobs data, as the stock market looked to halt a three-day losing streak.

Trading in the major U.S. index futures points to a lackluster start by Wall Street on Wednesday but tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 futures are clocking significant gains.
