Dismissing a petition by TV Today Network, the Delhi High Court has refused to interfere with the information and broadcasting ministry’s orders directing the network’s channels to air an apology scroll for advertisements promoting brands linked to alcohol, LiveLaw reported.

Last month, the central government introduced the draft Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill which, if passed, will likely affect not only platforms like Netflix and Prime Video but also news websites and journalists too.

The government’s new Telecommunications Bill has been widely criticised for threats to privacy, expanding the scope of government control and maintaining surveillance powers. This is why it was the topic of discussion at Digital Dialogues, a day-long event organised by Digipub to explore India’s digital ecosystem.

“I am not worried about journalists like me,” said independent journalist Hridayesh Joshi. “I am worried about those journalists who are away from power centres.”
