Zach Ertz returns to practice for the Cardinals

It has been a concerning week for the Arizona Cardinals leading up to their home opener.

One of the best teams in the league is coming to town in the Kansas City Chiefs, a game where the Cards were already underdogs.

This week, however, many key veterans have not practiced, leading to growing concern about who will be available this Sunday.

One of those important veterans seems to be progressing toward playing — tight end Zach Ertz. In the open part of practice Wednesday, Ertz was suited up and on the field, according to multiple reporters in attendance.

Ertz, who did not practice the last two days or suit up in the preseason, has been dealing with a calf injury. Kliff Kingsbury called him day-to-day on Monday, but clearly his practicing today is a great sign. He said that Wednesday’s participation would be important to Ertz’ ability to play this week.

Last season, Ertz tied the Cardinals’ single-season reception record for tight ends with 56 in just 11 games. He immediately became a reliable target for Kyler Murray and figures to have an increased role with the suspension of DeAndre Hopkins.

Ertz is an important matchup for the Cardinals as the Chiefs had plenty of defensive struggles last season, particularly early on. In a game that is projected to be a shootout, the Cards will need every weapon they have.

If the Cardinals are going to beat the Chiefs this Sunday, they are going to need all of their stars on the field. Let’s hope Wednesday’s practice means Ertz will be one of them.
