Your Skin Keeps a Chemical Alarm That Tells the Rest of Your Body When to Make Antibodies

A scrape, a sunburn, or a minor skin infection does not stay local. Within days, the body can be producing antibodies aimed at whatever caused it, manufactured in lymph nodes some distance away.

How the skin sends that message has been unclear. A study published in Nature on March 5, 2026, proposes that skin cells act as active immune commanders rather than passive barriers: they release a metabolic byproduct that functions as an internal alarm.
