Wombats are famous for one of nature's oddest feats: they produce cube-shaped droppings. Researchers now say those cubes may work like calling cards. In a study in the Journal of Zoology, a team led by Scott Carver of the University of Georgia reported that bare-nosed wombat scat carries individually distinctive chemical signatures and that wild wombats spent more time investigating latrines after scientists planted droppings from unfamiliar animals.
