Write It Down Before You Need It
Chanakya wrote in the Arthashastra that a wise man studies the nature of those he serves before he serves them. In a modern office, that wisdom translates to one unglamorous habit: write everything down, and do it before anything goes wrong. When your manager is disorganised, verbal instructions are liabilities. A task assigned over a quick chat at the coffee machine becomes your word against theirs the moment a deadline is missed. After every conversation where work is assigned, send a follow-up message, email, Slack, Teams, whatever your workplace uses, that restates what was discussed. "Just confirming: I'll have the vendor report to you by Thursday, and the budget sign-off will come from your side before I proceed." This is not paranoia. This is documentation.Keep a running log of tasks you've been assigned, the dates they were assigned, the instructions you received, and the status of each. A simple spreadsheet or a notes app works. The point is that when someone asks why a project stalled, you have a timestamped record showing exactly what you were told and when.
