Your Car Payment Is Not Your Car Cost: The Number Buyers Keep Leaving Out

Your Car Payment Is Not Your Car Cost: The Number Buyers Keep Leaving Out
A car’s monthly payment represents only one part of its true ownership cost, with fuel or charging, insurance, maintenance, repairs and other expenses adding to the final bill. AAA’s 2026 Car Guide highlights why buyers should compare the full cost of ownership before choosing a vehicle – Shutterstock

The monthly car payment can make a vehicle look affordable long before the math tells the full story. A payment may fit neatly into a budget, but the car still needs fuel or charging, insurance, maintenance, tires, repairs, registration and a place to go when it is not moving.

That distinction matters even more as buyers compare gas-powered vehicles with hybrids and EVs. AAA’s 2026 Car Guide puts that decision in the spotlight, with every category winner coming from either the electric or hybrid side of the market and higher gas prices adding another wrinkle to the ownership equation. The big lesson has nothing to do with picking a particular badge from a showroom. The real lesson involves looking beyond the number that appears in the financing paperwork.
