Pennsylvania has confirmed five measles-associated deaths in 2026, yet the federal government's national measles page lists only two deaths for the entire country. The gap has drawn questions from Congress while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention works with state epidemiologists on a standard way to decide when a death counts as a measles death.
In its Oct. 7 update, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 1,078 confirmed cases across 41 counties, 207 hospitalizations, and five deaths since the outbreak began in late April. The CDC's national measles page, with data as of Oct. 1, lists 3,887 confirmed U.S. cases and two deaths, a figure the agency says is "subject to change."
