YAMAGATA -- Train fans and officials gathered at JR Yamagata Station on Saturday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Yamagata Shinkansen line.
The platform erupted in applause when a Shinkansen train departed for Tokyo in the morning.
The Yamagata Shinkansen line started operating on July 1, 1992. Nicknamed Tsubasa, the line was the first in Japan to utilize the mini-Shinkansen format which uses modified tracks of conventional lines.
About 95 million passengers have used the Yamagata Shinkansen line, which travels between Tokyo and Yamagata stations in less than 2-1/2 hours on its fastest route.
