Woman left upset after mother told her she 'hates' her firstborn baby's 'old ugly' name

Naming your child is a very important decision for any parent but it can sometimes be influenced by other people's opinions. One woman has found herself in that situation after her mum told her she "hates" the "ugly" name she picked out for her firstborn child, the Mirror reports.

The expectant mother spent days brainstorming baby names with her husband until they finally agreed to call their daughter Stella Claire. She hoped her close family would instantly fall in love with the name too but the woman has been left feeling disheartened after this didn't happen.

She took to Reddit to seek advice from other users on whether or not she should stick with the unusual name she has chosen. In the post she wrote: "I excitedly shared the name my husband and I finally picked for our baby girl due August 1.

"Picking names has been a trial because everyone has an opinion on a name, or knew someone who they hated with that name. The baby's name is Stella Claire - and my mum hates it.

"She keeps going on and on and on about how it's an old ugly name, how she'll be an 'old maid' because of it, how I need to choose another name. When I firmly told her that's what it's going to be, she's now pouting and being very passive aggressive."

While she doesn't want to change her baby's name for the sake of someone else, she is hurt by her mum's reaction. Social media users flocked to the comments to reassure the woman that her chosen name was lovely and advised her to ignore her mum's harsh response as she will "get over it" once she's born.

One person wrote: "I love the name Stella! It's beautiful. Another remarked: "I would, and this may not be the right way to go about it, just say something like 'We'll see when we are here what name fits' to get her to stop being annoying. When Stella is born, her name then will be the last thing she is going to worry about."

A third said: "Ignore your mum she will get over it. My cousin named her daughter an unusual name and we all hated it and now we can't imagine her being anything else!"

A fourth replied: "Old fashioned names are becoming popular again. She will have plenty of company in school. Tell your mum point blank that she is hurting your feelings and you want her to keep her opinions to herself."

Somebody else added: "Not only did my mother hate my son's name, but she refused to call him his birth name when he is born. Hopefully she comes around! Congrats on your baby girl, and I think its a beautiful name you chose. And even if I didn't, who cares! It's your decision!"
