Woman ‘falls from balcony and lands on pensioner’ at London shopping centre

A woman has fallen from a balcony at a Bromley shopping centre - reportedly landing on a shopper aged in her 80s, leaving both needing hospital treatment.

Police and paramedics were scrambled to The Glades shopping centre in Bromley High Street, south-east London, around 2.15pm on Monday to reports a woman had “fallen from height”.

The woman, said to be in her 20s, is believed to have fallen from a balcony inside the shopping centre, said Scotland Yard.

Eyewitnesses reported that she collided with an elderly woman who was travelling down an escalator.

Some reported hearing a “really, really loud bang”.

Sarah Buckland wrote on Twitter: “My daughter witnessed it, she said that a woman fell from the balcony onto an older lady who was on the escalator going down towards Boots…she said it was awful…so so sad.”

Seven ambulance vehicles were scrambled to the scene.

The younger woman was rushed to a major trauma centre. Police said on Tuesday her condition is “not believed to be life-threatening”.

The elderly woman was treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital.

Shoppers reported being directed away from the area following the incident, while police temporarily taped off the scene.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 2.13pm on July 24 to reports of a person falling from height in the High Street, Bromley.

“We sent three ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, a volunteer emergency responder team and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance, which consisted of a paramedic and a doctor in a car.

“The first paramedic arrived in around three minutes.

“We treated a patient at the scene and took her to a major trauma centre as a priority. We also treated a second patient and took her to a local hospital.”

Police are investigating the incident.
