A woman was charged almost £700 after sending off for a new passport in the run-up to her "dream" New York holiday.

Sharon Barrett was looking forward to jetting off with her new husband, but just weeks before the trip she mislaid her passport. The 58-year-old said she had sent it off to HMRC to complete the VAT registration for her business.

Worried it wouldn't be back in time, Sharon, from Sunderland, applied for a new passport.
