Will Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Be the Scariest Egyptian-Themed Film Ever?

The last offering in The Mummy franchise in 2017 was an overwhelming disappointment, and it singlehandedly led to the cancellation of Universal’s plans to develop a shared cinematic universe with all its main monsters.

Nearly a decade later, we could finally be getting a movie worthy of the iconic original. Indeed, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy looks terrifying and could put the series firmly back into the horror genre.

The Mummy Franchise Remains Popular in the Mainstream

Despite the disappointment with the Tom Cruise-led reboot, the franchise is still hugely popular, and people want to see more of it. The films with Brendan Fraser as the protagonist remain classics, and new audiences are still discovering them to this day. There’s even been talk of Fraser returning to the series in a future reboot.

The iGaming market has played a role in keeping The Mummy in the public eye. One of the best Betfair slots is The Mummy: Books of Amun Ra, which is an officially licensed game based on the hit films that began with The Mummy in 1999. Games like this may have inspired people to check out the past films on streaming services, which has sparked the push to get Fraser back in his iconic role as Rick O’Connell.

Indeed, some reports suggest that The Mummy 4 will be released in 2028, with Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo also reprising their roles from the previous films. These are likely to exist separately from Cronin’s picture, which will most likely be a standalone offering in the franchise.

Cronin Set to Make Mummies Terrifying Again

Cronin is best known as a horror director, and he’ll be attempting to make mummies truly terrifying once again with his release this year. Rather than involve action elements like the previous instalments of The Mummy, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is set to be a straight-up horror.

The director has promised a unique take on the subject matter, centring on a missing person lost in the desert who shows up years later. The trailer suggests that there’s an awakening of some sort of ancient curse, and that the titular Mummy will go on a killing spree.

Director Is Known for Relentless Horror

Even though there hasn’t been much information released about Lee Cronin’s The Mummy yet, people who have followed the director’s career may have an idea about what it will be like. The filmmaker is known for relentless horrors that barely give viewers a moment of respite between intense scenes.

Cronin’s debut film was The Hole in the Ground in 2019, and he followed this up with Evil Dead Rise in 2023. Both films were packed full of frights, but scared audiences in different ways. They show that Cronin has a great skillset when it comes to delivering scares, and suggest that the Mummy could combine psychological and visceral forms of horror.

There’s a strong chance that Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will be the scariest Ancient Egypt-themed offering in a long time. It could make mummies scary once again, and inspire more horrors with similar themes.
