The Prescription That Skips the Most Important Step
A 60,000 IU vitamin D sachet, once a week for eight weeks, is one of the most commonly handed-out prescriptions in Indian primary care. It is also, frequently, handed out without a prior 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test. Without that number, the dose is a guess. Severe deficiency, insufficiency, and borderline-low levels are three different clinical situations. Treating all three with the same eight-week course is not evidence-based medicine, it is a shortcut that leaves a large share of patients still deficient at the end of it.
