A doctor, a priest, and a lawyer walk into a research paper. When Dartmouth researchers sifted through six months of Facebook activity to see which doctor jokes people actually enjoyed, the single most-liked joke in their collection turned out to be at the lawyer's expense.
The study, published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research in 2014, was, to the authors' knowledge, the first to use real Facebook conversations to examine doctor-related humor. Its most telling finding is not what made people laugh, but how often the doctor was the butt of the joke.
