Which supermarket is cheapest for alcohol this week? We compared Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Dunnes on their deals

With both St Patrick’s Day and the long weekend ahead of us, we decided to check out the price of alcohol in a number of Irish supermarkets to see where was the cheapest.

It’s safe to say that everyone got a shock in January when minimum unit pricing was introduced, causing drink prices to soar.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the cost of booze right now in different Irish supermarkets.

Tesco

Starting first with wine, Tesco has a number of bottles of red, white and rosé reduced to about €8 to €12. Some are reduced by just a euro or two, while others are down from €16 and €18.

Brands like Faustino V, Santa Rita 120, Dada and Yellow Tail are among those reduced.

The best deals for bottles of wine were Isla Negra, which is down from €15 to €7.50, Mcguigan wine, on sale for €8 from €16, Campo Viejo, down from €15 to €8 and Mirla Bay, on sale for €9, down from €18.

In terms of spirits, there are a number of reductions on leading brands.

70cls of Bacardi white rum, Gordon’s Gin, Beefeater Gin, Bombay, Paddy Irish Whiskey, Jack Daniel's, Teacher's, Smirnoff, Absolut, Captain Morgan, Jim Bean and Powers are all in the range of €21 to €25.

Jameson Caskmates Stout Irish Whiskey is on sale for €25, down from €38. Jameson Black Barrel 70cl is down from €47 to €30, a reduction of €17.

700ml of Jagermeister is €26, 70cl of Baileys is €12 and a litre of Martini is €12, down from €16.

On to bottles and cans next, eight cans of Carling cost €13, eight cans of Molson Canadian cost €13 and eight cans of Rockshore cost €12.65, while €15 cans of Coors cost €26.

Four bottles of Birra Moretti cost €7.49, 12 bottles of Tiger cost €15 and 12 bottles of Corona cost €15.

An eight-pack of Orchard Thieves is on sale for €14.50, while ten cans of Peroni cost €14.

One of the cheapest brands was Grolsch, which cost €7 for four cans.

Dunnes Stores

The cheapest wines in Dunnes started at about €7.72, including brands like Gato Negro and San Pedro. Buffalo Creek Dry White was just €6.84. The likes of Santa Rita 120, Yellow Tail and Côtes du Rhône were on sale for just €8.

There were also a lot of options for less than €20.

If you’re celebrating this weekend, bottles of prosecco were just €7.60.

In terms of spirits, 70cls were also about €21 to €23, while litre bottles were about €29.60 to €30. 70cl of Hennessy costs €35.50, while 70cl of Baileys is €12.

12 cans of Carlsberg are €20.50 and 12 cans of Guinness in Dunnes are reduced to €21.

20 bottles of Carlsberg were €20.50, 20 bottles of Bulmers are €21.50 and 20 bottles of Heineken were €22.50.

Eight cans of Rockshore are on sale for €12.65, eight cans of Hop House are on sale for €13 and 10 cans of Peroni are €14.50.

Aldi

The price of bottles of wine in Aldi started at about €6.80 and went up to about €15. Brands such as Douro, Estevez and Kooliburra were all below €8.

70cl of Napoleon Brandy was €19.88, 70cl of Old Hopking rum and 70cl of Corley’s Dry Gin were €20.71, while 70cl of Bushmills was €22.50.

70cl of Smirnoff is on sale for just €21 and a 70cl of Captain Morgan was the same price.

70cl of Ballycastle County Cream was just €8.01.

Eight cans of Carlsberg were on sale in Aldi for just €13.70, while eight cans of Bulmers and eight cans of Budweiser were €14.50. 12 cans of Guinness were being sold for €20.

10 bottles of Corona were just €13, while 20 bottles of Coors were reduced to €23 and 20 bottles of Heineken were €25.

Lidl

Kicking off once again with wine, some bottles in Lidl cost just €5.99. The average price of a bottle of white wine was about €7, with many options under €8. Bottles of red wine were slightly dearer and went to about €15, with cheaper options available.

Once again, most 70cls were about €21-€25, with a bottle of Jameson costing €28.50.

However, there were a number of options for under €20, such as the 500ml Hampstead Gin, Hampstead Pink Gin and Korol Vodka for €15.79.

700ml Irish Cream Liqueur was just a tenner, while Dundalgan County Cream was €8.

Eight cans of Guinness were €15, while eight cans of Carlsberg or Hop House were €14.

10 bottles of Corona were €13, while six bottles of Camaro were €7.19.

20 bottles of Coors were €23, while 12 bottles of Canadian were €13.
