It is still possible to get free Covid tests in Wales but only in specific circumstances.
It seems crazy to think that this time last year we were all bracing ourselves for the Omicron wave of Covid and yet again our personal freedoms were being restricted. Fast forward 12 months and Covid is still around but isn't having the same impact on most people's day to day lives.
But many people, especially those who are immunocompromised, are particularly vulnerable to Covid. Free lateral flow tests as standard were withdrawn over six months ago but there are still circumstances where you can get free tests.

You can order free tests if:
- A doctor or specialist has said you're eligible for new COVID-19 treatments.
- Your GP or healthcare professional asks you to take a test.

What if I am not eligible for a free test?
If you wish to test but are not eligible for free lateral flow tests (LFTs) you can purchase them private retailers. such as high street pharmacies. These often sell LFTs in store and online. Not all of them offer the same testing services.
Before you look for a private provider, you’ll need to think about what testing service you need. For example, if you are seeking a pre-departure travel test (‘fit to fly’), the testing requirements are set by the country you are travelling to, and sometimes the airline you’re flying with.
