When is Wednesday Season 2 coming out? Here’s what we know about the return of Netflix’s most watched show

Netflix has just announced that comedy horror Wednesday has overtaken sci-fi hit Stranger Things as its most viewed series.

The streamer has shared viewership rankings and has changed the way it reports its figures, revealing that the spooky series, which made an overnight star of Jenna Ortega who plays the titular role, is its most beloved.

The show, based on the death-obsessed teen Wednesday Addams from the iconic 1964 TV series The Addams Family, has had fans buzzing about its return since the first series hit last November. The latest news will only ramp up the anticipation for Series 2.

The first season of the dark comedy drama ended on a huge cliffhanger, leaving fans wondering who the threatening text was from and who is stalking Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the show’s stars confirmed the long-standing rumour that a new Addams family character will join the next series. And while the details are sketchy and there’s no official return date for the show – here’s everything we know about what to expect from our favourite dark and twisted teen and her oddball family in Series 2.

When is Wednesday Season 2 Coming Out?

Netflix is renewing Wednesday for a second season, which they announced with a video onTwitter, but there’s no release date. Filming on the Tim Burton project lasted six months, kicking off in September 2021 and wrapping up in March 2022.

So, if the trajectory of the new season follows the production timeline of the first, the next season should hit screens in mid-late 2024.

How many episodes will there be in Wednesday Season 2 and is there a trailer?

It’s set to be eight episodes like the first season, with each episode running for roughly 60 minutes. However, Season 1 was so popular it’s rumoured that the next series will be expanded.

But, unfortunately, there’s not a trailer yet. There was, however, an official announcement video from Netflix that confirmed the second series. In the clip, Ortega as the goth teen is seen smirking with a promise of “more torture” ahead.

The Addams Family spin-off crossed the one billion viewing hours mark in its first 28 days in December, a feat only ever achieved by Squid Game and Stranger Things season four.

This meant that it was extremely likely that Netflix would renew the show for a second season. But the news that Wednesday will definitely be returning to screens has nevertheless thrilled fans.

Which cast members are returning to Wednesday?

The star-studded cast, led by Ortega, includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez, Gwendoline Christie, Jamie McShane, Fred Armisen, and Christina Ricci in major roles. All are expected to be back for Series 2.

Who is the new Addams family member that’s joining the show?

Ortega said “this is true” when asked in a recent Netflix promo video if “season two will introduce a new member of the Addams family”.

But while the newbie’s identity remains a mystery – seemingly even to the cast – the actress enthusiastically said she’d love to see Cousin Itt make an appearance. Cousin Itt is the iconic character who is a four-feet tall creature, covered head to toe in blonde hair who sports shades and a bowler hat.

What could the story of Wednesday Season 2 be about?

Wednesday takes elements from the original Addams Family story that it has woven into a murder mystery. The first season explored Wednesday’s coming-of-age as she traversed adolescence, starting as a cold, inflexible teen to become a reluctantly warmer and caring friend who even is entangled in a romance.

Season 2 is expected to take a two-year leap from the events of the first season and will explore Wednesday’s family background more.

A showrunner said of the next series: “We wanna sort of explore and complicate all of those relationships going forward.

“The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season two... we’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged.”

No Romance?

Ortega has also revealed that the second season will steer clear of any romantic storylines from season one and focus instead on the darker, supernatural elements of the show.

“We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great,” she said. “We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more.

“Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously.”
