When is the EastEnders flashback episode airing on BBC One?

Soap fans can look forward to an extra special instalment of BBC's EastEnders this week, as the long-running drama plans to transport viewers back to the East End of London in 1979. The one-off trip down memory lane will focus on the Mitchell family, one of soap land's most iconic families, with actress Jaime Winstone leading the cast as Peggy Mitchell.

The 37-year-old actress is known for roles in Four Lives, After Hours and previously starring as Dame Barbara Windsor in BBC biopic Babs back in 2017. The episode will also feature characters that haven't been seen on screen before with 42-year-old actor George Russo (Villain, Oasis) starring as Peggy’s husband Eric, alongside Billy Mitchell’s older brother, Charlie, played by Charlie Heptinstall and Dean Roberts, as Billy and Charlie’s father Stephen.

The cast will also include Daniel Delaney as Phil, Teddy Jay as Grant, Henry Garrett as Archie, Rose Reynolds as Glenda and George Greenland as Billy. So for those wanting to tune in to the EastEnders flashback episode, here are all the details on when it's airing:

When is the EastEnders flashback episode airing on BBC One?

The Mitchell family flashback special will air on BBC One on Monday, September 5 from 7.30pm. If you miss the episode, you'll be able to catch up on the BBC iPlayer.

On playing Peggy Mitchell, a role which was previously played by Dame Barbara Windsor from 1994 to 2016, Jaime Winstone said: "It was a real honour to be asked to step into Barbara’s shoes again. I really felt like my journey with Barbara hadn’t really finished and this was a real opportunity for me to book end my journey with her.

"When we shot Babs I got to work with her very closely and became great friends with her. Being asked to step into Peggy Mitchell’s shoes, it’s the one character I didn’t get to do with Babs, so it really felt like such an honour."

The flashback storyline will be sparked as Phil struggles with the growing pressure from DCI Keeble and "is forced to confront some long forgotten truths" according to the BBC synopsis. Viewers will be taken back to 1979 where the Mitchells are "hit hard by a Britain in economic turmoil".

Will Phil's trip down memory lane help to reveal the truth of DCI Keeble's vendetta against the EastEnders family? Viewers will just have to watch to find out.

You can stream all episodes of EastEnders over on the BBC iPlayer. The flashback episode airs on Monday, September 5, from 7.30pm.
