What is postpartum psychosis? Lindsay Clancy’s defense at trial over murder of her children

  • Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, is facing a murder trial for allegedly strangling her three young children—Cora (5), Dawson (3), and Callan (8 months)—in January 2023, after experiencing a severe mental health decline following childbirth.
  • Prosecutors contend that Clancy, a former nurse, meticulously planned the killings and is fully responsible, while her defense argues she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness, at the time of the incident.
  • Clancy had been receiving psychiatric care for several months and, on the day of the killings, reportedly heard voices instructing her to harm her children and herself, subsequently attempting suicide by jumping from a window, which left her paralyzed.
  • While postpartum depression is fairly common among women who have given birth, postpartum psychosis is estimated to afflict only 1 to 2 per 1,000 women after delivery. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, mood changes and thoughts of harming yourself or others. Most women who have the condition do not wind up harming their children.
  • The trial's verdict is expected to hinge on the jury's assessment of Clancy's intent and mental capacity, with potential outcomes ranging from life in prison to commitment to a state mental health facility if found not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.
  • If you are experiencing feelings of distress, or are struggling to cope, you can speak to the Samaritans, in confidence, on 116 123 (UK and ROI) or visit the Samaritans website to find details of your nearest branch.
