What is ‘Plankton Mentality’? Auburn football’s Spongebob Squarepants-inspired approach, explained

Over the years, athletes have modeled their psychological approaches to athletic competition after everything from tigers to assassins to bunny rabbits. This season, Auburn football players are thinking much smaller – like microscopically small.

Auburn safety Jaylin Simpson told reporters on Tuesday that he and his teammates are looking to take a different approach in the midst of a four-game losing streak in their first season under head coach Hugh Freeze. Like all of our country’s brightest minds, Simpson explained he’s taking his inspiration from SpongeBob SquarePants.

Referring to the microscopic villain Sheldon J. Plankton from SpongeBob SquarePants, Simpson said he and his teammates are taking on a “Plankton Mentality” going forward. Plankton is best known for being completely obsessed with stealing the secret Krabby Patty formula from underwater restaurant magnate Mr. Krabs.

Just who will be playing the role of Mr. Krabs to Auburn’s Plankton is still a mystery at the moment, as Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers continues to recover from a shoulder injury.
