What is happening between Russia and Ukraine? Crisis between two countries explained

Russia invaded Ukraine in the early hours of this morning in a major military attack.

Despite months of denying planning such an attack, President Vladmir Putin announced plans early on Thursday morning to "carry out a special military operation" in Ukraine.

The Russian president said the response would be "instant" if anyone tries to take on Russia.
