'What a turnaround' - Newcastle United supporters react to Fabian Schar's two-year contract extension

Newcastle United have confirmed that Fabian Schar has signed a new two-year contract with the club which will take his time on Tyneside to the summer of 2024. It signals the first step of the Magpies’ summer rebuild as they look to punch further up the table next season.

Schar has transformed his career at St James’ Park since Eddie Howe’s arrival after looking as though his time was up in the earlier stages of the campaign under Steve Bruce. He has been excellent alongside Dan Burn in the heart of the defence as United have emerged as one of the Premier League’s in-form sides.

The news comes as a welcome relief to United supporters after it looked as though there was going to be no resolution for his contract situation as it moved into the final couple of months. Schar was also, unsurprisingly, overjoyed after agreeing the new deal.

"I'm absolutely delighted. It's what I always wanted - to stay here to play for this unbelievable club,” he told the club’s official website. "Since my first day in Newcastle, I felt so comfortable; it's like a second home and now to stay here for some more years, I'm delighted."

His manager was equally elated to see the Switzerland international sign on the dotted line. Howe added: "I've been delighted with Fabian's form. He is the ultimate professional and a hugely important player in our dressing room.

"I'm delighted he has committed himself to the club. He is very driven for future success and I'm pleased he will be a part of our future."

Plenty of Magpies supporters echoed those sentiments on social media following the announcement on Friday morning. Here is what some of them had to say on Twitter.
