West Bengal: Youth in hospital with suspected monkeypox

KOLKATA: Bengal reported the first case of suspected monkeypox on Friday.

The affected youth, who recently returned from a European country, has been kept under isolation at a private hospital in Kolkata and his samples have been sent for confirmatory test at National Institute of Virology. The health department has alerted his family, asking them to stay in home isolation till the test report comes.

A health department official said the youth from West Midnapore had recently flown back from Europe. He was subsequently brought to the Kolkata hospital with rashes and other symptoms, which led doctors to suspect it to be monkeypox.

Barring a few suspected cases in other states, India till now has no confirmed monkeypox case. The health department earlier had issued guidelines and alerts on how to handle suspected cases.
