Kolkata is likely to see a relief from the heatwave today, May 27, with the Regional Meteorological Centre predicting light rainfall in the city. The MeT has predicted enhanced rain activities in south Bengal from Wednesday, officials said that chance of rain in Kolkata is higher on Thursday and Friday. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata for May 28 and May 29, and has warned of rain and thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds.

Kolkata's weather conditions are expected to remain similar through the week with intermittent cloud cover and evening thunderstorm activity. "So far, the prevailing conditions suggest a 30% chance of rain for Kolkata on Wednesday, but the chance goes up to 80% by Thursday. This time, the intensity of the thunderstorm activity should be enough to drag down both the mercury and the humidity," Met scientist HR Biswas, head of Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata, told The Times of India.

Stormy week from May 28 in Kolkata
The residents of Kolkata are bracing to face a humid and stormy week from Thursday, May 28, with rain and thunderstorms expected to return across south Bengal, according to the IMD. The city is expected to witness partly cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
Wednesday and Thursday (May 27 and May 28) are expected to be the wettest days of the week. The weather office has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in Kolkata and adjoining districts during this period.

Maximum temperatures are likely to stay almost unchanged for the next three days before dropping by around 2°C to 4°C later this week. In Kolkata, daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 35°C and 36°C till Wednesday, with a slight relief likely by Friday and Saturday.
Night temperatures may continue to hover around 29°C to 30°C throughout the week, keeping humidity levels high and conditions uncomfortable despite the possibility of rain and thunderstorms. The weather office has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid standing under trees or near electric poles during periods of lightning activity.
The city is expected to remain humid through the weekend. On Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, temperatures are likely to stay between 35 and 36 ˚C during the day and around 29 to 30 ˚C at night with isolated thunderstorms possible in the evening hours. Met officials expect temperatures to fall by around two to three degrees in the coming days.
