When going shopping, many of us write a list whilst the brave among us wing it and just hope they have picked up everything that they need.
Some items that make regular appearance are the likes of milk, bread, eggs and orange juice - to name a few - often grouped as 'essentials'. And whilst everyone has their own definition of what they class as essential, for many these items are only going up in price.
To help figure out how much it may cost if you pop to the shops for necessities, Glasgow Live compared a list of 10 essential items that may be in your weekly, or monthly, shopping trolley. Here's how much it came to.

The price of Tesco essentials - January 2023
Choosing the cheapest options currently available, this is what we found looking online at Tesco's own website.Bread
The cheapest we found was 'H W Nevill's Wholemeal Bread 800g' It comes in both white and whole meal and costs 39p - which is said to be priced matched to Aldi.
Milk
Whether you go for semi-skimmed, skimmed or whole, a one pint bottle will cost you 95p. If you need something more, you can opt for their 1L carton costing £1.15 which is Tesco's own Whole Longlife Milk, which also comes in the option os skimmed and semi-skimmed.
Cereal
The cheapest cereal option we found was Tesco's own Cornflakes Cereal weighing 500g and costing 63p.
Other items such as the supermarket's own version of Rice Krispy's and CoCo Pops costs 89p.
Ham
If you want a sandwich whether it's for your work, lunch at home or to pack in your kids lunchboxes, then ham may be a good idea.
Tesco's cheapest option for this is Eastman's Cooked Ham weighing 125g. The description says it has nine slices per packet and costs 86p.
Cheese
A ham and cheese sandwich is always popular - or you could use it to make Mac n Cheese - amongst many other dishes making it a great buy.
Tesco's Finest Red Leicester Truckle, which weights 200g, is priced at £2.20. However if you are a Clubcard member, there is a deal on.
Written on Tesco's website it states: "Any 3 for £6 Clubcard Price - Selected Cheese And Sliced Cooked Meats 30g - 220g. Offer valid for delivery from 20/10/2022 until 30/04/2023."
Chicken
You can pick up a pack of two chicken breasts for £2.50 with the weight coming in at 300g.
Rice or pasta
Rice and pasta are two cupboard essentials whether you're making sweet and sour chicken with rice or a pasta dish.
Tesco's Microwave Long Grain Rice 250g comes in at 35p whilst the cheapest option for pasta will cost shoppers 41p for Hearty Food Co's Penne Pasta weighing 500g.
Soup
It's still winter and a great buy - whether for lunch or dinner - is soup, which you can also have with bread.
A 400g tin of soup, specifically Stockwell & Co's Vegetable Soup will cost you 54p which is said to be Aldi price matched.
Eggs
Eggs are another essential - and you can make a lot of dishes with it whether it's egg fried rice, a poached egg or to use in baking.
Currently Tesco's Medium Free Range Eggs, which comes as a pack of six, will cost you £1.30.
Squash
Whilst it's important to eat, you also need to stay hydrated. Rather than just water, you can buy Stockwell & Co's No Added Sugar Double Strength Orange Squash. For 45p, this will get you 750ml.
