Psychology says people who panic-clean before their parents visit may be preparing for more than guests

The coffee mug has been sitting on the table since yesterday. The laundry chair has quietly become a laundry mountain. There are shoes near the door, unopened packages on the counter and probably something questionable in the refrigerator. Psychology suggests this reaction can involve more than cleanliness. Impression management, self-presentation, social evaluation and environmental psychology can help explain why a parent's visit can transform an acceptable home into a problem that needs fixing immediately.
