Troy Parrott scored a wonder volley to salvage a 1-1 draw for MK Dons away to their hated rivals AFC Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon.
The Buckingham Street striker smashed home a cross from captain Dean Lewington ten minutes from time as the visitors chased an equaliser.
Alex Woodyard had given Wimbledon the lead midway through the first half and that looked like it might be enough for Parrott struck.
The Tottenham Hotspur loanee has established a habit of scoring spectacular goals of late, having scored a 97th-minute rocket in Ireland’s friendly win over Lithuania earlier this month.
Parrott has struggled for form at times in Milton Keynes and was dropped for a spell over Christmas before winning his place back as a wide striker, his attitude impressing fans.
And he further endeared himself to the MK Dons support with a stunning effort that left Nik Tzanev in the Wimbledon goal without a chance.
Wimbledon looked to have done enough to clear a corner but the ball fell to Lewington, and his deep cross found Parrott unmarked, and his technique to finish off the bar was superb.
Former Bohemians defender Warren O’Hora and Ireland under-21 captain Conor Coventry also started for MK Dons, as did former Waterford striker Scott Twine.
There’s no love lost between the two sides, MK Dons having moved the original Wimbledon FC from south-west London to Milton Keynes in 2003.
AFC Wimbledon was formed as a protest and took most of the fans with it, to the point where the new club had higher attendances in the eighth tier than MK Dons in League One.
There had long been plans to move the club out of London, with one hare-brained scheme to relocate the club to Dublin in 1996 gaining the support of Eamon Dunphy among others.
Relations between Wimbledon and MK Dons remain frosty, and Wimbledon were fined by the FA in 2017 for refusing to print MK Dons’ name on their matchday programme.
