Warning over reports of man 'trying door handles of vehicles' in Woodthorpe

Motorists have been warned to be vigilant after a car was broken into and a man was reportedly seen trying door handles of other vehicles. Police said a Volkswagen Golf was broken into in Tennyson Road, Woodthorpe, between 2pm on Sunday, January 15, and 10.36am the following day.

Nothing was taken during the break-in, Nottinghamshire Police confirmed. On Sunday, shortly before 10pm, it was also reported a man had been spotted trying car door handle in nearby Grange Road. No entry was gained.

The suspect is described as being around 20 years old, between 5ft 7ins to 5ft 10ins tall and has dark and short hair. It is believed the offender was using a scooter, Nottinghamshire Police said.

Inspector Mark Stanley, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “While our enquiries remain ongoing, including checking recorded footage, we’re also urging motorists to be vigilant and make it as difficult as possible for criminals to target their vehicles.

“We’d advise people to make sure their vehicles are locked and they don’t leave any valuables on display. Find a secure place to park, such as in your garage if you have one, or alternatively ensure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit area.

“Having an alarm and immobiliser fitted to your vehicle is also an effective way of deterring criminals. We're also urging local residents to be alert and report any suspicious people or vehicles to us.”

Anyone with concerns about car crime in their area can call police on 101. In an emergency or if an incident is in progress, call 999. For more advice on how to protect your vehicle, visit Nottinghamshire Police's page here.
