Wales national anthem lyrics and meaning in full as fans goes wild for Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Nerves are running high as Gareth Southgate 's England prepares to face Robert Page's Wales in the group stages of the World Cup in Qatar. Both the Welsh national anthem and God Save The King will be belted out across the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium ahead of the 7pm kickoff.

There will only be a few thousand Welsh fans in Doha, but the crowd will go wild, as they did the last time Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau was blasted out. Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, which translates to Land of My Fathers, has three verses, with only the first one commonly sung at sporting events.

During Wales' opening match against USA on November 21, global goosebumps were felt as 3,000 supporters and the Welsh team belted out the country's national anthem.

It felt extra poignant, because last time Wales qualified for a World Cup in 1958, they sang God Save the Queen.

Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg tweeted: "Well Wales have won the national anthem singing contest. Their players looked proud to belt out their anthem while the US team looked faintly embarrassed to be singing in public.”

Gary Lineker, the face of BBC's World Cup coverage, tweeted: "Crikey, the Welsh can bang out an anthem. Goosebumps."

Other fans described it as an "absolute belter," adding that it would "bring a tear to a glass eye".

No doubt we'll hear another heartfelt rendition of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau today – and if you're planning on joining in, you can follow the guide below so you don't miss a word.

These are the lyrics as they are written and sung in Welsh and also the meaning in English, as shared by Wales Online.

Verse 1

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,

Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;

Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad,

Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Chorus

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.

Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,

O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.

Verse 2

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,

Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;

Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si

Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.

(Chorus)

Verse 3

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad tan ei droed,

Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,

Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,

Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

(Chorus)

Verse 1

This land of my fathers is dear to me

Land of poets and singers, and people of stature

Her brave warriors, fine patriots

Shed their blood for freedom

Chorus:

Land! Land! I am true to my land!

As long as the sea serves as a wall

For this pure, dear land

May the language endure for ever.

Verse 2

Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets,

Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards;

Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be

Her streams and rivers to me.

(Chorus)

Verse 3

Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot,

The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat,

The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand

Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.

(Chorus)

Wlad Fy Nhadau is the unofficial national anthem of Wales, and was created by Evan James in January 1856, and composed by his son James.

A week later it was performed by Elizabeth John in the vestry of Tabor Capel in Maesteg, Bridgend county, and over time it gained popularity.

The song was originally called Glan Rhondda, because it was created when James was walking along the banks of Rhondda.

It's believed Evan wrote the song in response to his brother wanting him to join him in the US, where he had recently emigrated to.
