A volunteer in Derry has spoken about the struggles she has seen among the elderly that she helps week in and week out.
Roisin Carlin volunteers for Older People North West, situated on Derry's Chapel Road and says that though the work that they do is incredibly rewarding, the elderly of the city face many struggles.
From covid to isolation and loneliness to financial fears, Roisin and other volunteers spoke of the importance of the work that they do.

Speaking to MyDerry, Roisin said: "The centre itself is a hub of activity. There is always music, singing, dancing, exercise and a listening ear is available at all times. It is a home from home for many.
"Older people are just about getting over the fear and worry that coronavirus>COVID brought with it. There wasn't one day during COVID that meals weren't delivered to those who needed them.
"COVID created a lot of isolation and depression amongst the most vulnerable and just as they were building their confidence to get back out and socialise the cost of living crisis has created more uncertainty.
"With worries about heat and electricity some have reported fear of turning on the heat and lights.
"Any older person looking for a good nutritional meal at a very low cost can call into Older People North West Monday to Friday and enjoy a 4 course meal.
"There is a full program of activities to chose from and above all a really good feel good factor. I would recommend volunteering with older people northwest as a driver, drivers support or many other volunteering opportunities in house. Anyone in need or looking to volunteer can contact at 02871 347478."
Despite the struggles they see every day, many of the volunteers spoke to MyDerry about how rewarding they find volunteering to be.
Chris, who has been volunteering for two years said: "Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
Lorraine, who has been volunteering for three years said: "I Love it to bits. I love seeing all of the clients. The rewards Volunteering in Older People North West is unmeasurable."
Jeff, who has been volunteering for five years said: "Following my heart surgery I wanted to give something back having received great care. I started volunteering with OPNW on meals on wheels , I get great satisfaction from supporting others and being part of the team here."
Cora said: "I started volunteering with OPNW three years ago after my parents died. I love getting to know all clients and working with a great team. It's very rewarding."
Sean has been a volunteer for almost six years and said: "It has helped me connect with others and see a side of life I was never aware of. I really enjoy helping out in the local community and meeting different people. I am now pursuing a career in health and social care."
