We have the year upside down. The time to go away is not summer, when travel is expensive and England is sporadically quite pleasant. The time to go away is now, in the grey armpit of winter, ideally somewhere bright and warm, not too far away but different enough to remind you that there are other ways of being.
Somewhere like Andalucía in southern Spain, where the tapas are outstanding, the temperature rarely dips below light sweater weather and it’s absolutely fine for your children to be running around a town square at 11.37pm.
