More than 3000 South Australian students are currently COVID-19 positive but authorities are hopeful of removing the mask mandate in high schools later this month.
Education Minister Blair Boyer said 589 school staff also have the virus but both figures are down on the numbers infected at the end of term one.
At that stage, there were more than 5600 cases among students and 847 among staff.
The state's mask mandate was removed for primary school students from the beginning of term two, but remains in place for secondary students until at least the end of next week.
Mr Boyer said that would be reviewed in the coming days but he remained hopeful the mask mandate could be dropped.
"My hope is that these figures stay steady and that we can be in a position to remove masks at the end of the four-week period," he told reporters.
"But we will make a decision closer to that date."
The minister's comments came as SA revealed the 40 primary schools to host new vaccination clinics in a bid to boost the jab rates among younger students.
The list includes 10 in regional centres and six non-government schools.
SA on Monday reported 3392 new virus cases and two more deaths.
There are 248 people in hospital with the virus, including seven in intensive care.
