'Not at all' - Virgil van Dijk fires blunt message back to critics over Liverpool theory
Virgil van Dijk has dismissed suggestions Liverpool are suffering a hangover from their gut-wrenching end to last season and believes they must bring the "joy and freedom" back to their game.
The Reds ' underwhelming start to the campaign continued on Saturday with a 3-3 home draw against Brighton and Hove Albion that has left them 11 points adrift of leaders Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand.

Liverpool clinched the League and FA Cup double last season only for their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple to be thwarted by missing out on the Premier League title by a point to Manchester City on the final weekend, after which they were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
But Van Dijk is adamant last term is having no bearing on the travails of Jurgen Klopp 's side this time around, which he has hinted is restricting the Reds' usual approach.

It's not often Liverpool fans will become full with anxiety and trepidation while watching Manchester United get thumped, but to see a Manchester City side - who an out-of-form Reds play in two weeks - rip their old rivals to shreds must be cause for concern.
Pep Guardiola's champions already look well on course for a fifth title in six years and remain unbeaten in the league after eight games. Erling Haaland bagged yet another hat-trick to take his tally to 13 goals in eight appearances - the 22-year-old is bordering on a cheat code at the Etihad, where he has three consecutive league hat-tricks.
While Arsenal have enjoyed a similarly imperious start to the new campaign - they are a point ahead of City - it's hard to see anyone keeping up with the Sky Blues for the remaining 30 games, not least a Liverpool side who look bereft of energy and confidence. It is testament in itself that Klopp's team pushed City so far over the last five seasons, even pipping them to an illustrious first Premier League title in the 2019/2020 season.
