Vikings 90-man roster player profile: RB Ty Chandler

Welcome to the beginning of our 2023 season preview content!

Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at each player on the roster in-depth with backgrounds and how they currently project forward on the Minnesota Vikings roster.

What is the best-case scenario? What is the worst-case scenario? What should we expect from them during the preseason and beyond? We will break all of that down here.

As a staff, all of us at Vikings Wire ranked the entire 90-man roster 1-90 and will be releasing player profiles in reverse order.

Best case scenario

Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

Chandler earns a major role in the running back rotation for the 2023 season. Selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft, Chandler has the utility to play on all three downs, especially as a pass blocker on third down. He also has a 10-yard split in the 99.7th percentile and showed that with a great preseason in 2022. With the Vikings’ projected committee approach in 2023, Chandler could be in for a big season this year.

Worst case scenario

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Chandler gets washed out by Kene Nwangwu and DeWayne McBride. Despite being a second-year player, Chandler is the oldest player in the running back room. That could both help and hurt him.

What to expect in 2023

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

The expectations with Chandler are high this season. He is the most well-rounded running back after Alexander Mattison and has the talent to become the future starter in the backfield. He should be used heavily in the rotation this season and could potentially take over as the lead back.

Right away, Chandler feels like a third-down back with his pass-blocking and receiving acumen.
