A jaw-dropping video captured the terrifying moment when a plane “drop[ped out of the sky” and collided with a car on a busy Florida highway, leaving the driver injured. The crash occurred around 5:45 p.m. Monday on the southbound lane of I-95 in Cocoa, Florida.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a “fixed-wing multi-engine aircraft” attempted an emergency landing and crashed into a 2023 Toyota Camry. In a shocking dashcam video filmed from a car directly behind the Camry, the plane is seen diving toward the highway during rush hour. It rear-ended the Camry, bouncing on top of it before crashing slightly to the left, sending sparks flying across the road.
The 57-year-old female driver of the Camry was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, authorities said. Remarkably, she survived the crash despite the frightening impact. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old male pilot from Orlando and his 27-year-old male passenger from Temple Terrace were uninjured, the FHP confirmed. Both the pilot and passenger remained at the scene.
“We just saw this plane drop out of the sky,” witness Jim Coffey told Spectrum News 13. Coffey, who was mere seconds away from being struck by the plane, recalled, “I noticed it was there, because there’s a plane right there, I was like, ‘Hopefully it lands to the side.’”
His son, Peter Coffey, also a witness, added, “I thought it might maybe aim around and not hit the car, but bam, the wheel just smacked right dab on the back of the car.”
Fortunately, Jim Coffey noted that the Camry didn’t roll but instead “kind of mashed and went to the side,” preventing even worse damage. Photos taken after the crash showed the crumpled rear end of the Camry, with the plane’s nose and wheel torn off in the wreckage.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will lead the investigation into the emergency landing incident, while the FHP conducts a separate crash investigation. This wild and unexpected event left onlookers stunned, but thanks to the driver’s quick thinking and some good fortune, the outcome wasn’t as catastrophic as it could have been.
