Swedish pop star Zara Larsson asked her fans on Instagram why flying leaves her feeling aroused. Sex experts have offered three likely reasons planes make people horny: engine vibration, sleepiness that lowers inhibitions, and a break from daily life. In past interviews, the experts stopped short of calling any of them a proven cause.
Larsson said going public with the thought felt feminist. Women have sexual thoughts too, she argued, and openness can ease the stigma around female sexuality. Engine Vibration and Sleepy Passengers
Speaking to the US website Mic in 2021, brain scientist Nicole Prause suggested the engines may play a part. She founded the Liberos lab in Los Angeles and cited studies showing genitals respond readily to vibration. That research covered the frequency felt in aircraft seats. Carol Queen, staff sexologist at the San Francisco sex shop Good Vibrations, was blunter and called a plane 'basically a huge vibrator full of people.'
Prause also tied the feeling to sleep, since passengers often doze on long flights. She said the brain grows less guarded near sleep, so thoughts of sex come more easily. Most sex happens before bed, she added, which may train the mind to link drowsiness with desire. In her view, arousal often comes less from effort than from letting go. One London consultant told the same website that idle people-watching on board fed his imagination.
How Common It Is and Time Away From Routine
Justin Lehmiller works at the Kinsey Institute, a US sex research centre. Mic reported that he found 53% of the US adults he surveyed had fantasised about sex on a plane. Slightly more men than women gave that answer. On a related measure, the gap reverses. In his survey of over 4,000 US adults, 84% of women and 81% of men found the idea of public sex arousing, as the graphic below shows.
Lehmiller also pointed to travel in a 2021 interview with the website InsideHook: 'Travel puts us in a novel environment and breaks our regular routines.' In his view, people on holiday leave work and stress at home. He knew of no study specifically on travel and arousal. Sex educator Jessica O'Reilly told Mic that a flight's break from emails and calls can relax the body enough for desire to build.
Nervous Flyers and a Police Case in Ibiza
Not every passenger feels what Larsson feels on a plane. O'Reilly said handing control of the flight to a crew of strangers can leave nervous flyers too stressed to want sex. For other passengers, that loss of control can add just enough tension to turn into excitement.
Acting on the feeling can lead to trouble on landing. In September 2023, a crew member on an easyJet flight from Luton to Ibiza opened a toilet door on a couple having sex, Insider reported. The airline confirmed that police met the pair when the flight landed.
