Video captures group of lads skiing in Cork as they make the most of the wintry weather

Parts of the Ireland gave the Alps a run for their money this week with one group in Cork even taking to the makeshift slopes of the Rebel county.

Snow fell in many parts of the southwest, west and north of the county on Monday and Tuesday night amid multiple Met Eireann snow and ice warnings.

Some parts, particularly Cork and Kerry, got heavy snowfall and one group of friends took the opportunity to don their skis and turn the Mealagh Valley into their own mini Alps.

Skiing fanatic Alex Nowotynski didn't have to go too far to enjoy some slopes this week as he and his friends Matthew O'Neill and Podge Cronin headed out to Nowen Hill and had a blast sliding around in the fresh snowfall.

Branded the lads' 'West Cork Ski Tour,' they were out yesterday morning to enjoy the weather and captured some fantastic scenery of a snow-capped Bantry - if you squint, you could nearly mistake it for Val-d'Isere.

"It's been my dreaming to ski at home," said Alex, a proud Drinagh man, "and it was just phenomenal, those views looking down the whole way across Bantry."

Alex is the owner of Skibbereen Farmer's Market favourite 'The Badass BBQ,' and is an avid adventurer, having loads of experience in mountain biking, cliff jumping and plenty of skiing in the Alps.

But West Cork gave Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise a run for its money as the lads managed to get some great downhill action, making a line from the radio transmitter station down to the bottom of the 1,755ft hill.

And while there was no official Apres-Ski, Alex did say they had a refresher down at Connolly's Gaelic Bar.

The snowy scenes were similar to those when the 'Beast From the East' delivered a cold snap to Cork and skiers took to hills and mountains across the county to make the most of the snow.

When heavy snow hit Cork city in 2018, there were snowsport fans zipping up and down Patrick's Hill on skis and snowboards.

But if you're feeling left out of the action, there's not much time to get out and about in the snow. While we're under a fresh weather warning, Met Eireann is predicting 'much milder' conditions to return by the weekend.
