The Bear is an American comedy-drama which has been a smash hit in the US after it aired on FX earlier this summer. Now the eight-part series, one of the few shows to score 100% on review site Rotten Tomatoes, is airing in the UK. Fans of good TV can now stream The Bear on Disney+.
But what is all the fuss about, and what is the show actually about? The restaurant-based show stars Jeremy Allen White (Shameless USA), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Andor, Girls, The Dropout) and Ayo Edebiri (Big Mouth) and has already been renewed for a second series on American channel FX.
It follows White, who plays young chef Carmy, who has to return to his native Chicago to run a sandwich shop left to him by his late brother after creating a successful cheffing career in New York.

Audiences and critics loved The Bear and as well as the aforementioned 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, US critics have said: "As with the perfect high-end cuisine or Italian beef sandwich, every element of The Bear combines to create a delectable treat you'll want to savour all over again as soon as you've finished it.”
And Sophie Gilbert of The Atlantic said that, while the series is ‘horrifically stressful’, it is ‘also thrilling, ambitious, funny, devastating’, adding: “It’s a gorgeous show, riddled with moments of short, sharp beauty.” Viewers also posted on Twitter about the show with one writing that it was 'one of the best TV shows I have ever seen."
What is The Bear about?
According to the official synopsis, the hit US show "follows Carmen 'Carmy' Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a young chef from the fine dining world, who comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop – The Original Beef of Chicagoland – after a heartbreaking death in his family.
"A world away from what he’s used to, Carmy must balance the soul-crushing realities of small business ownership, his strong-willed and recalcitrant kitchen staff and his strained familial relationships, all while grappling with the impact of his brother’s suicide.
"The Bear is about food, family, the insanity of the grind, the beauty of Sense of Urgency and the steep slippery downsides. As Carmy fights to transform both The Original Beef of Chicagoland and himself, he works alongside a rough-around-the-edges kitchen crew that ultimately reveal themselves as his chosen family."
