Under-fire Celtic star deletes social media account after LASK implosion

Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan seems to have deactivated his Instagram account.

This follows severe online criticism after Celtic's defeat by LASK, which saw them exit the Champions League. Martin O'Neill's side surrendered a four-goal aggregate lead, with the Austrians winning the tie 5-4 on aggregate.

Celtic had gone ahead in Linz through a deflected Callum McGregor effort, but Moses Usor levelled before Robert Ljubicic put LASK in front shortly after the restart.

The midfielder was singled out for his performance after he was dispossessed on the edge of his own box, allowing Adeniran to score. He lost possession 19 times, leading to heavy criticism online after the final whistle.

While supporters expressed frustration at the players, manager Martin O'Neill, and the club's board, some of the criticism aimed at McCowan in particular seemed excessive.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, McCowan's Instagram profile appeared unavailable, with users shown a "User not found" message when attempting to access the account.

Following Tuesday evening's defeat, Celtic have dropped down into the Europa League, suffering the same fate at the same point as last season against Kairat Almaty.
