UFC’s Jonathan Martinez wants high-ranked opponent after failed Dominick Cruz booking

LAS VEGAS – Jonathan Martinez is looking for a big name in the bantamweight division after putting together a five-fight winning streak.

Martinez (18-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) has surged up the 135-pound pecking order on the heels of a streak that includes notables such as Cub Swanson and Said Nurmagomedov. He saw former champion Dominick Cruz as an opponent that could take his career to the next level, but with the option off the table, he’s content settling with anyone ranked above him.

“I wanted Dominick, but I see he’s booked already,” Martinez told MMA Junkie Radio at UFC X Radio Row earlier this month. “Just want someone higher to show my skills and still get better and chase that belt.”

Martinez, 29, is currently No. 15 in the official UFC rankings. That means a number of potential matchups with fighters above him could be available, but he’s going to let the UFC decide.

As a soft-spoken and humble character, Martinez could change things up and try to be more bold about a specific name. He’s not keen to do that, though, and will continue to stay the course of what’s got him to this point.

“Everyone in the division I respect,” Martinez said. “I know everybody has a family and is going the same thing I’m doing, so I’m not really mad at anyone in the division.”
