The U.S. Navy has strategically positioned three guided-missile destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean to bolster defenses against a potential attack from Iran on Israel. This move comes amidst heightened tensions, with U.S. officials warning that an attack could occur imminently.
The three destroyers deployed in the region are the USS Arleigh Burke, USS Bulkeley, and USS Cole. Notably, in April, the USS Arleigh Burke was part of a duo of destroyers stationed in the same area.
During the previous incident in April, the USS Arleigh Burke and USS Carney destroyers successfully intercepted over 81 attack drones and at least six ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards Israel. The interception was carried out using the SM-3 ballistic missile interceptor system onboard the ships, which were strategically positioned in the eastern Mediterranean at the time. The SM-3 interceptor boasts an impressive range of up to 1,550 miles.
The presence of these guided-missile destroyers underscores the U.S. Navy's commitment to safeguarding its allies and interests in the region. The deployment serves as a clear demonstration of readiness and capability to respond to potential threats swiftly and decisively.
